Since dust jackets only became common after World War I, this is likely the 1911 edition, but a printing closer to the 1923 inscription.

It’s unusual for a dust jacket for a book this old to have survived. It’s not in great shape (the book presents better without it), but it is interesting to have it nonetheless. The dust jacket advertises other reprinted books by this publisher — Pinnochio, Heidi, and other classics.

I love that this book has a handwritten inscription placing this as a Christmas gift in 1923. Inscriptions add a lot of character and history to an old book, and this is one of the longest inscriptions.

A.L. Burt was a publishing house from 1883 until 1937. They focused on reprinting popular and classic fiction (such as this) and also expanded into children’s series books. In 1937, it was sold to Blue Ribbon Books, which two years later sold itself to Doubleday.

Historical context:

When this book was printed in 1923, Warren G.
